How to Install Linux Operating System

One of the simple joys of transferring from another operating system to the Linux operating system is the ease of installing the Linux operating system. Listed below are the steps for installing Linux.
  1. Obtain a copy of Linux. There are many different Linux distributions. Some distributions are simply personalized copies of a standard Linux package. Some specialize in different areas such as general desktop, scientific community, etc. Research which distrbution is good for your needs.
  2. Resize existing partitions to make room for the new Linux partition.
  3. Put the media containing the Linux installer in the appropriate media slot/tray and restart the computer.
  4. Enter the BIOS setup area upon rebooting the systen. Set the 'Boot' order so that the media containing the Linux installer will boot prior to the hard disk drive.
  5. With some distributions of Linux, the installer is on a Live media which means that you can select to install Linux right away or choose to 'Test Drive' Linux before installing it. Make your selection at this time as to which you would like to do.
  6. After testing Linux and/or installing the Linux operating system, restart the computer; removing the Linux install media when prompted.
  7. If Linux exists with other operating systems, you will be prompted with a boot menu where you select the operating system you would like to boot at the time. To switch from one operating system to another, yu will have to restart the computer.
You have now installed Linux and all is left is for you to enjoy the new operating system.

There are several methods by which to run Linux. This artice will list a few of the methods by which to run Linux on your compter. Note that while there are many different Linux distributions such as Slackware, Debian, Red Hat/Fedora, and many built from these distributions, but this article will speak of Linux in general.
One method of is commonly used to test Linux, but can also be used as the preferred method of running Linux on a computer system. These methods are to ad and execute the operating system from a LiveCD, LiveDVD, LiveUSB. Tat is to say that the complete operating system will be contained on optical media or USB flash drive. The reason why this is the preferred testing method is because there areno changes made to permanent changes made to your system during the test period. The Linux operating system is loaded into memory and executed from there and the supplemental software will be contained right on the Live media. After you have tested Live Linux distribution, you simply restart your computer removing the LiveCD. LiveDVD, or LiveUSB before the computer starts its boot sequence. Note that when testing your system there will be nothing written to your hard drive except which you specifically tell to save to your hard drive (such as a word processing document). Some system administators prefer this method because of the slight speed advantage over conventional methods.
Another method of running the operating system is to have it install on the hard drive. It will be loaded and executed pretty much the same as any other operating system. The operating system is stored  hard drive as well as all other programs that are used. The advantage of this method is that by installing Grub or LiLo (bootloaders), which is installed automatically, you are able to choose the partition you would like to boot from. That partition may or may not be a Linux distribution. This method  is slightly slower than using the Live method because it have parts of the operating system stored on the hard drive.
The final method that I wi mention in this article is by booting the Linux operating system by floppy disk. This method is commonly used as a rescue disk when something is wrong with booting directly from the hard drive. It can also be used as a security measure also. Seeing the computer will not boot without the floppy disk.
These are the three most common way of running Linux on a computer. I hope that the information inside have been found to be helpful.
