To install windows on computer is not a science. If someone has a little information about installation of windows xp and has a boot-able CD, he can do it. Following are some points uninstall old windows and install new windows.
- Does your computer support the windows you want to install?
- Do you have a backup of your drivers which will be required after new installation? If yes then ok. If you do not have the backup of drivers then first you have to take back up of the drivers. To know how to take backup of the drivers read my article Drivers installation and drivers backup.
- Do you have a bootable Windows XP CD with its key? Without key you cannot install windows. The product key is usually located on the Windows XP CD cover.
- Start your computer and press F12 for boot menu, and select boot from CD Rom and if your computer does not show boot menu by pressing F12, then press dell/F2 which is applicable on your computer to go to bios setup, and change boot from CD Rom.
- Now restart your computer and now it will boot from CD Rom and there will be a message to boot from CD Rom press any key, so press any key, then setup of the windows will start.
- Read the Windows XP Licensing Agreement that appears on the screen. Press F8 on the keyboard to accept the agreement. After this step select the hard drive partition to install Windows XP.
- When asked for format and drive up gradation you have to choose the option for quick format with NTFS format. Wait for few minutes until the computer completes the formatting process. It will erase all data from hard disk partition and copy the setup files. Windows XP will now restart with your mouse working.
- Select the Regional and Language Options and click "Next" to proceed.
- Enter your name and organization's name. Click on "Next" to proceed when asked.
- Now provide CD key written on the CD cover if asked.
- Select Date, time and regional setting.
- On the Welcome to Microsoft page accept the default setting when the page appears that has "Will this computer connect to the Internet directly, or through a network?" If you are connected through some network, select the option that describes your network connection.
- Click "Yes" in case you are connected to the Internet and want to Activate Windows.
- Now you have to check the Drivers and install missing drivers. So read my article Drivers installation and drivers backup.
