ALL ABOUT WINDOWS:
The History of windows :
Eevery now and then people new to the world of computers might wonder "what is this operating system or what is this windows mumbo-jumbo people keep talking about ? ". Well for people who really are new to computers or have an aversion to the pc might say "well i really dont care as long my system runs ".Operating systems are software which interface with the hardware installed in a computer and enable the software to utilise the resources to perform a specific task. In simpler words its like having rails on which a train needs to run, without rails, a train cant run. similarly, without an operating system , a pc wont run(means you cant use your pc like you normally do).
*Windows is an operating system ,like ubuntu (linux distro),macintosh. Windows is the brainchild of Microsoft owner,Bill gates. When the company was first founded in 1978 , they were developing software based on BASIC,a programming language. At that time (1970s to 1980s), computers used the command line interface. the command line interface basically means you sit in front of the computer with nothing but a screen showing a blinking cursor and you had to type commands to execute or go by your daily tasks needing a computer.
*In the year 1986, microsoft made a breakthrough by releasing a GUI modification of MS-DOS.This later led to the release of windows 3.0 in 1990 which boasted new features like a streamlined user interface (GUI) and a protected mode (code execution) for the then latest intel 386 processor.
*Then came the other versions of windows, each considerably better than its predecessor. windows 95,windows nt ,windows 98,windows 2000,windows me and in 2001,came windows xp.For people wondering what nt means,it stands for new technology and xp stands for experience. So xp was revolutionary it offered GUI , new features and enabled support for a newer and more powerful breed of hardware. For people who started using computers since xp was released, they would not understand how revoltuionary xp was at that time. Similar work went on and microsoft wanted to develop something significant and more secure than xp.Thus the new version, christened under the codename of Longhorn was a buzzword, however the idea was dropped and so development began anew inside microsoft's labs. The new version named vista was set to make a good impression with new implementations like the UAC(user account control) and the directx 10. However it was seen as a resource hog and application compatibility issues with commonly used applications further caused it to lose popularity. Therefore windows vista was seen as a huge disappointment.
*Microsoft had to take a lot of flak for vista and vowed to improve with its next new operating system (OS from herein), namely windows 7.
About Windows 7:
*windows 7 picks up the positive traits of xp and vista and implements it in a wonderful manner. This new operating system feels fast compared to vista and can compete with the old XP neck and neck and wins by a good margins.since this is a reasonably new operating system , it is bound to get better with more updates and service packs. However here is a good thing about windows 7.It has an application compatibility mode that actually works.windows vista had these backlogs and basically being a resource monger that vista was , windows 7 can run on systems we might call ancient (ex: a 1.6 ghz pentium 4 with 512 mb ddr ram and everything integrated was able to perform somewhat well in the benchmarks. applications ran like it ran on xp on most occassions).
*underground news circulated among the internet that microsoft chose to build windows 7 with vista's kernel so that there would be better cost management and it could be released soon.Though the credibility of the news cannot be verified,it can be said that whatever microsoft has done has been done well.
Do you need windows 7 ?
as mentioned above windows 7 shows a positive sign and everyone can finally heave a sigh of relief. people speculated that windows 7 would be the second vista (i.e a disappointment).
windows 7 is all about simplicity, from the installation to the general usage , integration of UAC is very subtle and it does work well unlike windows vista's "in your face" kind of protection and throwing dialog boxes everywhere it wished on its whims and fancies. That said, applications work well and all options are finally accessible from the control panel so system administrators need not brood over issues.
Last but not the least, the new version of directx , i.e directx 11 is set to take computer gaming to new heights by offering upto 30% more performance than dx 10.so finally a gamer friendly OS is at hand.also there are wizards for tasks so people new to computers need not stare at their screen and ponder on how things need to be done. it offers much more performance than vista.has a slick user interface and good application support.making this the best OS.
windows 7 has also been priced considerably cheaperthan what vista was when it made its debut.so it adds considerable value as well as really appreciable gains in productivity
also user migration from vista to windows 7 is simple and can be easily done
One major flaw that windows 7 has that windows xp users cant upgrade from xp to windows 7 and have all their settings intact. That does add to the annoyance an xp user may face as it requires backing up all data and having to make a clean install
Ill post a few pictures of windows 7 so people can see how it actually looks.I would suggest people actually test the beta for themselves !
